Landlord's Game Returns to Arden

On Friday, May 1,  our guest author, Mary Pilon,  was welcomed at the Buzz Ware Village Center on behalf of the Arden Craft Shop Museum and Archives Committee and the Arden Georgists.

Mary Pilon’s new book, The Monopolists,  traces the Monopoly game's history from its politically-minded feminist originator, Lizzie Magie, through its evolution as a folk game to becoming a commercial blockbuster. For over 5 years, Mary traveled hundreds of miles to over ten states researching for this book.

In the process of reporting this story, she came to Arden, visited the Arden Craft Shop Museum, met and talked with Georgists, and learned about the connection of Henry George and the earlier Landlord’s game to the game of Monopoly.

Many people lined up after Mary's talk to get copies of "The Monopolist" and have it signed by the author. Everyone enjoyed staying after for refreshments and a chance to talk with our guests and friends.

Mary Pilon is an award-winning  sports reporter for the New York Times, She was previously a staff writer at the Wall Street Journal for the paper’s Money and Investing section. In 2011 she was named one of Forbe’s Magazine’s 30 under 30 for media. Her work has appeared in Gawker, USA Today, and New York Magazine, among many other publications.

This winter, she was interviewed on WHYY  with Marty Moss-Coane  and spoke about Henry George, single tax, and the Ardens in her interview! It was a privilege to have her come speak here in the Ardens.

Mary's interview with WHYY is available online.
