We found some fun information in the October 23, 1908 edition of the Arden Club Talk! The newsletter’s banner lists what the Arden Club does including: "Theatricals, Esperanto, Economics, Dancing, Singing, Camp Fires, Club Room, Athletics, Library, and Piano."
The headline for this issue is Reorganization [of the Arden Club]. It gives a brief account of what has been done since the end of the summer season. (Note that most of Arden’s early Residents were only here in the summer months.) It reads: This is to say that the Arden Club has been reorganized, a constitution adopted and mark this, made a permanent all-the- year-round, always on-the- job organization. Articles of the Club’s constitution follow this declaration, describing how the organization will be organized and run. Founders decided that a $3.00 member fee would be charged, urging: You will all agree that the season of 1908 was a great success; more so than the previous one. Well, let’s all start now to make 1909 outshine it. Your executive committee has been busy. Arrangements have been made to maintain winter quarters for use of resident and visiting members. The front room of the Red House [the current Arden Craft Shop Museum…will...have a stove installed, wood bought and books donated for a library. Visiting members will always find it warm and comfortable for them on Sundays and holidays and materials will always be on hand for making it so at any other time. The biggest thing ahead of the Club now is a large permanent clubhouse to be erected…just south of the tennis court. Visit the Arden Craft Shop Museum’s new exhibition “There’s A Gild For That!” to see more about the history of the Club and its Gilds. |
