The past has a future here in the Ardens.

107th Arden Fair on Saturday, August 30th

8/28/2014

The Arden Fair this year will be another round of entertaining and varied displays of craftsmanship and creativity. As seen from the Arden Fair announcements from a 1941 Town Crier below, the Fair has always celebrated unique Arden crafts, such as those made by the Arden Weavers; delicious food, like homemade ice cream; and a touch of the mystical (who wouldn't want their tea leaves read?) A communal effort, the Arden Fair has a long history of bringing in friends and strangers from afar to join in the revelry and spirit of the Ardens, and this year should be no different.

The Arden Craft Shop Museum will be open during the Fair from 11 am - 4 pm. Please stop by to see our Third Annual Shakespeare Exhibit and get one last look at the Arden Fair t-shirts before we begin our preparations for the 10th Anniversary Exhibit coming in October 2014.

Sunday on the Green

On Sunday, August 3rd, friends and neighbors came together on the Green in Arden to "play" homage to the 1911 baseball game that found Upton Sinclair, "Confabulator Price", and a number of others in jail for playing games on the Sabbath.

In protest of Delaware's Blue Laws, a number of Ardenites played baseball on the Green in the hope that it would highlight how the Blue Laws' enforcement was unequally applied to different people and different sports. The game and resulting arrests got the attention of the media, and the following debacle was reported in newspapers across the states. The original New York Times article can be seen here.

In good-humored remembrance of that event, Ardenites and their friends gathered once again 113 years later to enjoy a game of baseball, homemade Cracker Jack popcorn, and good company. Despite a few bouts of rain, the game went on. Not ironically, the Blue Team won a solid victory.

Alex and Jan did a great job organizing the event, and all in attendance had a good time.
Donations received for the food were generously given to the Arden Craft Shop Museum. Thank you to all who participated and all who donated!
