The Ardens continued to make space and break down barriers. In 1952 the Andersons, an African-American family living in Ardencroft, petitioned to send their children to the Arden School. At that time, the Arden School was classified by the State of Delaware as a white school. The residents of the Ardens agreed with the family, sent their signed petition to the Delaware State Board of Education apprising them of the school’s intention to integrate, and welcomed the Anderson children. From 1952 until it closed in 19769, the Arden School welcomed all children of the Ardens to learn and grow.
